2016- 2017
5 years later…
The question was and still is, How do you get more girls involved in technology and engineering courses? Five years ago, October 12, 2012 to be exact, Roger Lagesse and Deborah Marshall answered that question by starting the Girls In Engineering Program. Five years later, the program is going stronger than ever.
The original five: Erika Akpa, Tanisha Robinson, Victoria Gormley, Ashlee Gordon, Nikki Williams, who became the first all-girls team to compete at the 2013 Mid-Atlantic MATE ROV Regional Competition placed 6th out of 14 still keep in touch with Mr. Lagesse, Ms. Marshall, and all the girls involved in the Girls In Engineering teams. Nikki, a Bio-Medical engineering student at old Dominion University; Ashlee, who is in the duel degree engineering program at Spelman College often return to inspire current members of the program. Their robot, Pippy, well she has been reengineered over the years and is currently DORA. |
Since that original group, the program has gone on to win awards, grants, participate in National Engineer’s week, all while still continuing to build underwater robots that compete in the Nauticus sponsored Marine Advanced Technology Education (MATE) ROV regional competition at Old Dominion University.
As the current group of girls: Shandon Amos, Lily Berz, Vanessa Collado, Makayla Craddock, Frances Manansala, Maheen Mubashar, Jasmine Navarro, Lauren Tidoe, Lauryn Tyson, and Helen Wang prepare to leave for the summer and Shannon, Vanessa, Frances, and Lauren Tidoe prepare to graduate and ALL go to college majoring in engineering, the program will continue to be dedicated to promoting young women to enter the engineering fields and inspire high school girls to follow their academic interests to a career in engineering, thereby addressing the lack of women in the science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) related careers.
